Exploring Seoul in Winter’s Embrace

One cannot visit Seoul without acknowledging its unique position in world history. The number 1 thing on my list to do was a visit to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), and it was an experience that juxtaposed serene landscapes with the palpable tension of a nation divided. Standing at the edge of this geopolitical anomaly, with North Korea in plain sight, was a humbling reminder of the complexities of peace and conflict. I was actually able to see North Koreans going about their daily life, riding bicycles, and seemingly oblivious to me watching them.

As an enthusiastic traveler, I’ve always believed that a city reveals its true character under the blanket of each season. I spent a week in Seoul this past January, and amidst a biting cold of -17 Celsius and a whimsical snowfall, I discovered a city resilient in beauty and rich in culture.

Those who know me know how much I hate winter, but I was brave and continued to uncover more of the city. Seoul Tower, a beacon of modernity, offered a panoramic embrace of the city. As I ascended, the cityscape unfolded beneath me, a tapestry of ancient and contemporary designs. The tower, standing resilient against the icy winds, provided a moment of tranquility as I looked over the bustling city below, twinkling like a constellation of urban stars.

The grandeur of the city’s palaces was amplified by the snowfall. The palace, with its intricate architecture and frozen gardens, was like a scene from a historical drama. Each step through the palace grounds was a walk through centuries of history, a narrative of dynasties and traditions that continue to shape Korea. When I couldn’t stand anymore of the biting cold, I stepped into the cafe to have some hot tea and enjoy a respite from the cold.

Seoul, in its winter cloak, was a revelation. The extreme cold added a layer of challenge, but it also amplified the city’s beauty, resilience, and warmth. As I bid farewell to this vibrant city, I promised myself that I would return….hopefully in the Spring or Summer!
