A Week of Wonders in Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand is my favorite country in South East Asia, and being able to spend a week in Bangkok in February was nothing short of exhilarating. From the bustling streets to the tranquil waters of the Chao Phraya, every moment was fantastic in this city of contrasts.

My journey began with a foray into the world of finance at the SIBR 2023 Bangkok Conference on Interdisciplinary Business and Economics Research. Amidst the backdrop of towering skyscrapers and the hum of a city that never sleeps, the conference was not only enlightening but also a perfect introduction to the city’s dynamic business landscape. I presented a paper on the speed of cash holdings adjustments in Latin American firms, which was very well received.

The bustling district of Sukhumvit where the conference was held was a thrilling adventure. Walking its lively streets, I nearly found myself in a close encounter with a car! This heart-pumping moment was a vivid reminder of the city’s untamed energy. The area, known for its endless shopping options, also offered a deep dive into the local culture and lifestyle. From luxury boutiques to local brands, Bangkok’s malls were a shopper’s paradise. Each mall was a universe in itself, filled with everything from cutting-edge fashion to intricate Thai handicrafts.

A highlight of my trip was the enchanting dinner cruise along the Chao Phraya River with a friend who had never been to Thailand before. As the city lights danced on the water, the star of the evening was undoubtedly the crab – the best I’ve ever tasted, each bite a testament to Thailand’s rich culinary heritage. I still dream of this crab very often! The blend of exquisite flavors and the serene river ambience made for an unforgettable experience.

Finally, the visit to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market was like stepping into a vibrant painting. Navigating through the canals, surrounded by boats laden with colorful fruits, vegetables, and handmade goods, was surreal. The market was not just a place of trade but a living, breathing part of Thailand’s cultural tapestry. Sampling the fruits and the food was everything! Isn’t Thai food just the best in the world?! Another simple restaurant you must try when in Bangkok is Suda Restaurant – inexpensive and delightful food!

I’m always left in awe of Bangkok that effortlessly marries the old with the new. Bangkok is a city of endless surprises, from its culinary delights to its bustling streets and serene waterways. Thailand is a place where every turn brings a new story, and it will always be one of my favorite countries in the world!
